ABOUT THE SHEEP

We have two primary flocks of sheep: NADSA-registered dairy sheep and FBA-registered Finnsheep.

Finnsheep are incredibly versatile, able to lamb in "litters" while demonstrating excellent mothering (triplets are dependably dam-raised and vigorous.) Our flock is bred for parasite and disease resistance, quality wool, and milk production. The Finns have gorgeous fleeces for handspinning.

We've found Finnsheep overall to be a great start into sheep dairying, with more flexibility in milking while lambsharing with litters of babies. â€‹

Fiber arts are a big part of my Finn flock management. Micron tests have shown our fleeces to range from 16-25 microns, and their wool is next-to-skin soft. (Check out my favorite new sweater dress on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1EMakX7How/ )

In 2026 we are welcoming dairy sheep! These are a blend of Lacaune, East Fresian and Awassi sheep, with percentages and pedigrees tracked by NADSA. They are expected to have significantly higher milk production and less lambs than the Finns, which does mean less flexibility with road trips, but also more cheese 🧀 😋

Sheep milk is sweet, creamy and easy to digest! With an average of twice the solids content (fat and protein) of goat or cow milk, it tastes like a blend of whole cow milk with half&half. Sheepsmilk yogurt turns out thick, like Greek yogurt, without needing to be strained.

Our biosecurity standards:

  • The flock has been biosecurity tested three times for OPP, CL and Johne's diseases, and has always been clean!

  • The new 2026 additions come from Perry Dairy in South Dakota. She has fully tested her flock for CL, OPP and Brucellosis and forwarded me the 100% clean test results.

  • I use Flock54 testing for a panel of genetic diseases and resistances. Although we have never found a genetic defect, we have several genetic lines of Scrapie and OPP resistance!

Records:

  • I keep track of birth weights, litter sizes, udder structure, milk production, weaning weights and more, and am happy to share any stats you'd like to know! Many of these are also shared in each sheep's profile on The Flock tab.
